Lot 52 - a tourism hub

Lot 52 – a tourism hub

Lot 52 in Haines Junction is a large plot of land immediately north of the Da Ku Cultural Centre. We have a vision a vibrant tourism hub at the site centred around a workshop and interpretive walking trails.

The project

This project is at a fairy early stage. We have consulted with the community to determine what people would like in a tourism hub, and drew on that input to craft an initial plan. We’ve recently completed a feasibility study on that first plan, looking at practical matters such as how we can provide water and sewer, as well as finances.

A centrepiece of the plan, the workshop would be a large space where community members will build tools and crafts, bringing in tourists to learn about the community and traditions and purchase local handmade products. Outside, the interpretive walking trails would wind through the treed property, with spots for family picnics and information boards with visual and written content about the CAFN’s economy, culture and history.

There will be space for one or more food trucks outside the workshop.

We heard strong interest from the community in an amphitheatre at the site. However, we cannot currently make the finances work for that. So, we are setting aside space in the plans and hope to add an amphitheatre to the site in the future if it becomes financially possible.

We have secured funding from Yukon Tourism and the Economic Development Fund for the Yukon to support the plan development. We are currently seeking capital funding for our construction costs. We hope to have more news on this in the not-to-distant future.
